Automation and the Future of Work

In the advent of automation, many people are asking the question: “What will the future of work look like when artificial intelligence takes over?”. There is some reason to worry; however, experts predict a different future than one may expect.
According to a report by HBR, there are some key differences in the skill sets of people and artificial intelligence that lead them to believe that artificial intelligence will actually lead to a period of growth and prosperity. Artificial intelligence, in its current state, is limited in its capabilities. Algorithms can process massive amounts of data quickly, efficiently, and, in many cases, more accurately than humans. However, artificial intelligence does not have social or creative skills that govern many descriptions of current jobs. On a recent podcast, McKinsey Global Institute chairman James Miyanka postulated that only about 3% of jobs would be fully lost to automation. Most jobs that will be affected by automation will shift, asking people to do less wrote work and more creative and social work.
This is why at Werklehrer Education we believe strongly in teaching students creative and social skills. Our workshops develop students as creative thinkers through team-oriented projects that summon them to work through complex challenges. Furthermore, students develop the ability to work alongside peers effectively by learning vital communication and collaboration skills. Students will learn frameworks and principles for design work, like design thinking from IDEO and Stanford d.school’s core design principles. We prepare our students today for the careers of tomorrow.
